Take a tunnel full of graffiti, one model, a parkour expert, enough lighting equipment to create daylight and a head full of ideas.
That was the plan, it had been for a few months. A good mate (Ross Holkham) and I had discussed doing something like this for a while. We both had several training days and collection of DVD’s from the likes of Brett Harkness, Damien Lovegrove, Zack Arias, David Hobby and various Creative Live seminars I was eager to put it into practice.
This shoot was the first of many personal projects that I will be doing over the Autumn/Winter. It allowed me to experiment with the Elinchrom Quadra and Ranger whilst not being under the pressure of a client shoot.
If you are interested in helping or participating in future shoots let me know. I’m planning on a few shoots in Norfolk, Dublin and Chamonix.
Below are a few shots from the session. I have tried to include some of the EXIF data.
ABOVE: Canon 5D ii, Sigma 85/1.4 :: 1/60 @F8 ISO 200 :: Quadra @ 1/2 power 70×70 SB to camera left about 5ft
ABOVE: Canon 5D ii, Sigma 85/1.4 :: 1/60 @F10 ISO 200 :: Quadra @ 1/4 power 10 deg grid on 21cm reflector directly above Gary
ABOVE: Canon 5D ii, Canon 24-70 :: 1/50 @F9 ISO 200 :: Quadra @ 1/2 power 70×70 SB to camera right about 6ft :: Speedlight with blue gel on full power
ABOVE: Canon 5D ii, Canon 17-40 :: 1/160 @F20 ISO 200 :: Ranger RX @ 1/2 power :: 70×70 gridded SB over my head. I used the grid to get better light fall off on the background.

This must have been great fun, and the results are excellent! As usual in your work, the colours are wonderful, but I think today my favourite is the monochrome one of Gary looking upwards. The lighting is so restrained and the result very subtle and engaging. Good stuff!
Thanks Michael. The B&W one is one of my favourites too. Nice to light in a more subtle way and try different angles. Thanks for commenting 🙂
Awesome work mate! Really gutted I couldn’t make it but I’ll defo be at the next one. My favourite is the one of Gary throwing shapes on the floor 😉
Cheers Matt – this guy could bust some moves! Next one will be in Norfolk sometime during the week in November, so a little way for you. Let me know if you’re interested. Be great to catch up for a beer then or before in town. Cheers Jon
Cool post Jon. Love that you’ve put the settings in there too. Still getting to grips with my ranger.
Cool pics. Loving the guy on his hands in front of the graffiti one. Shame your so far away. Would have been good to come to the next one!
Cheers Chris. The Ranger is an awesome piece of kit mate. How you getting on with yours? Hopefully off to Norfolk on November for another project. Only got room in the cottage for 2 others, so let me know if you’re interested? Be 2 days and about £250 each to pay for models etc.
Incredible lighting… great work and super photography 🙂
Wow, what a great collection of very funky images, Jon! My favourite has to be the one of the guy on top of the container with the girl standing. x
Thanks Kim, the container shot was a good one, was kind of difficult to get these guys into the same image having a free runner and a fashion model. So we changed the outfit, made her more edgy, really pleased with it :]
